Shasta via Avalanche Gulch

May 1999

Ron Karpel

Saturday, we hiked up from Bunny Flat trailhead and climbed the 3,000 ft. or so to Helen Lake. This was a heavy snow year for Shasta and the coverage was complete. The hike was quit uneventful and we where able to get good rest after setting up our camp. Stephen took his skis about a 1000 ft. higher and had fun skiing the slop, although he complained about icy patches on the snow.

Sunday, with alpine start at 4 AM we set up to climb the gulch. We had breakfast in one on the Red Bank's Chutes. The snow in the chute was quit soft, and we were able to cut seating platforms. But the wind soon drove us off and we found that right on the ridge, condition were more pleasant.

We continue slowly up Misery Hill and finally reached the summit.
