A Climbing Marathon

by Ron Karpel

September 19-20, 1998

Saturday, starting from Union Valley we climb towards Kearsarge Pass. About 1/2 a mile before the pass we got off trail and continue in a straight line to Gould's East Ridge and gained the class 3 summit block. After a lunch break, we continued along the ridge towards Dragon Peak and summited. Then back over the pass West of Gould. We were scheduled to climb Mt Rixford before heading down to camp near Charlotte Lake, but we ran out of steam and out of time, and all we could manage was finding a nice camp site with running water close to Kearsarge Pass Trail and called it a day.

Following day we set out to climb Mount Bago. Near Charlotte Lake we rendezvous with the sane members of our group who skipped the detoured to climb Dragon Peak the day before. We continue to climb Bago via the class-2 Northeast ridge. On the way down, Bob couldn't resist and he ran up Rixford just so he won't have to came back for it. We continued on the trail, back over Kearsarge Pass and down to Onion Valley. I said goodbye to everybody and waited for Bob to come back. He didn't take long though, and we were soon on our way home.

Participants: Bob Suzuki; Ron Karpel; Arun Mahajan; Pat Ibbetson; Greg Johnson; Dot Reilly; Jeff West; Samuel Simons; Landa Robillard
